Couples Activities

If your Skype connection is anything like mine then you’re most likely spending most of the conversation listening to your partner talking to you while their image is frozen on the screen. As frustrating as frozen, pixilated, choppy Skype chats can be, what’s not to love about them? Sure, I rate most of my calls as ‘poor’ after almost every conversation, but seriously if you don’t have a Skype account, get one, it’s free and extremely entertaining.

On my birthday last week, to my surprise I was serenaded over Skype by my fiancé and his roommates just as the clock struck midnight. As melodious as three guys singing and other playing keyboard was, I’m sure watching it live would have made it even more entertaining. Unfortunately, just as they started singing the video froze and came back live exactly as they finished the song. I have to say though, that it was not only one of the most fun Skype calls I’ve ever had with my fiancé but also one of the best birthday celebrations I’ve ever had. Though I couldn’t watch the guys singing to me, one of them, apparently camera shy, opted to hold up 26 paper signs, each with one word of the birthday song on it in exchange for having to sing. Nonetheless, staring at a frozen image of one guy sitting in front of a keyboard, two others standing awkwardly in the background and my fiancé sitting in front of the camera while listening to them sing was priceless.

Just because you and your partner are celebrating special occasions long-distance doesn’t mean they can’t be celebrated at all or with little enthusiasm. There’s no question that you and your partner would rather be together, but unfortunately you’re not so why not make it fun by doing something truly unique! Let your partner know that you can still celebrate that special occasion with the same enthusiasm as if you were together. There’s so many great ways to celebrate your special occasions virtually. Have fun with it and make a silly video that would make your partner laugh on his or her birthday. Or make up a dance and perform if for them, after all they only turn that age once!

Anniversaries only come once a year also so why not make it more than just a phone call? Guys, light a candle and dress up fancy for her with a single rose in one hand and a poem in the other. If your musically inclined, write her a song about your struggles and triumphs together during your year together…while apart. Ladies, your man likes to be romanced too. Put on that new dress you’ve been waiting to surprise him with and show him the photo album you made for him that shows what you two did together over the last 12 months.

Even if you celebrate your anniversary every month, taking the time to do something special for each other to show that you remembered that special day even though you were apart is important. For those who celebrate their anniversaries monthly, coming up with new, extravagant ways to show your partner you love him or her over Skype every 30 days may be difficult. A simple phone call with a twist can make your special occasion romantic. Learn how to say a phrase in a foreign language and say it to your partner when the time is right during your call. Saying a heartfelt ‘I love you’ with their name attached to the end is often enough for your partner to know your hearts are still together though you and your partner are miles apart.

No matter if you decide to entertain, romance or just sit down and talk with your partner over the phone or Skype, special occasions can be just as special despite the distance between you and your partner. With a little imagination and a lot of love in your heart, you can create an anniversary or birthday more memorable than ever before. Step back and assess your relationship with your partner. What has been lacking in your relationship that would reconnect you two again? Find that connecting link and turn it into an unforgettable memory on your special occasion. Your partner will be sure to never forget it.
